Case Overview

Gréasán Digiteach na Gaeltachta or gteic is a network of 30 innovation & digital hubs that are currently being rolled out in areas throughout the Irish Gaeltacht. These innovation hubs will be along the majestic Wild Atlantic Way in Donegal, Mayo, Galway, Kerry and Cork and will also include Waterford and Meath in the Ancient East of Ireland. Six Gaeltacht islands and seven non-Gaeltacht islands will also be an integral part of this digital ecosystem to support the sustainability of these offshore island communities.

Udárás na Gaeltachta first contacted Netfocus with a requirement to kit out the Spidéal hub in Co. Galway. This hub is a new state-of-the-art innovation & digital hub that facilitates individual workers as well as teams and companies.

The Requirement

Gteic @ An Spidéal is a new facility designed to accommodate all types of digital workers offerring both open and private work spaces. We were tasked with the job of designing and installing a network solution that would support all service users. Specifically, the network has to support the following service objectives:

1. Incubator units
2. Private office space
3. Secure work environment
4. Relay / hot desks
5. High speed Wi-Fi to all building areas
6. Conference room facilities
7. Video conferencing facilities
8. Meeting / training spaces
9. Co-located workspaces
10. Support for Broadband capacity of 1000MBps

Our Solution

Because of the remote nature of the Spidéal digital hub, UnG needed a solution that could be managed remotely using an easy-to-use cloud interface. It was important that they

could manage all aspects of the network including wireless, wired and firewall devices. We selected Ubiquiti as our hardware supplier for the following reasons:

Easy to use cloud controller that managed access points, LAN switches and firewalls
Good choice of dual frequency access points suiting both long distance and high-density applications
Good functionality around port security and VLANs that allowed us to isolate individual rooms and work spaces.
Excellent remote diagnostics and performance monitoring.
